Frequently Asked Doula Questions
I have a planned cesarean, but still want support. Can you help?
Absolutely! A doula will support you through your surgery with as much mental and physical preparation as possible. On your baby's birth day, your doula will ensure that your voice is heard. She will be there for you if you want your partner to stay close by the baby, she will stay close to you and talk you through every step of the surgery, she will ensure you get off to the best possible start with breastfeeding as soon as possible once you are in recovery.
I already have someone coming with me (husband, partner, friend). Why do I need a Doula as well?
A doula does not replace any other support people you chose to have present at the birth of your baby. She will work with that person to support you, and in fact, may even support that person as well! A doula is a complement to your birthing team. She is a trained professional who is experienced with birth and some of it's many outcomes. She has an objective and non-judgmental frame of mind to offer you clarity throughout this very emotionally charged event.
I have a Birth Plan. I don't need anything or anyone else!
One thing a doula knows for sure is that no two births are the same. You may have a set plan for an ideal labour, but then something changes and veers you off course. Your doula is there to support you as your change your mind during labour, or to simply remind you of what it was you wanted in the first place so that you can get back on track. Your doula will offer you unconditional encouragement with her voice and her physical presence.
